Ahoi Ashtami Date, Shubh Muhurat, Vrat Vidhi and Significance

Ahoi Ashtami Date, Shubh Muhurat, Vrat Vidhi and Significance

Ahoi Ashtami is a vrat kept by mothers for the well-being and long life of their children. It falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight of Kartik, a few days after Karwa Chauth and about a week before Diwali. It is widely observed across North India, and by many families in Mumbai and Maharashtra.

Ahoi Ashtami 2026

Sunday, 1 November 2026. The puja is performed in the evening after sunset, and the fast is traditionally broken after sighting the stars (some families wait for moonrise). Star and moon sighting times vary by city, so please check a local panchang. The vrat repeats every year on Kartik Krishna Ashtami.

The Significance

Ahoi Mata is worshipped as the protector of children. Traditionally the vrat was observed by mothers of sons, but today many mothers keep it for all their children, daughters and sons alike. The fast is also kept by couples who are praying for a child. Many people treat it as a day of gratitude and a way of asking for a child's good health.

The Katha: The Woman and the Syahu

A well-known story says that a woman went into the forest to collect soil before Diwali to decorate her house. While digging, her spade accidentally killed a cub of a porcupine-like animal called a syahu. The mother syahu cursed her, and over time the woman lost her children one by one. When she shared her sorrow with the village women, they advised her to worship Ahoi Mata, and to draw the image of the syahu and its cubs and ask for forgiveness. She observed the vrat with sincerity, and her sons were restored. The story teaches compassion, repentance and the power of sincere prayer.

Vrat and Puja Vidhi

  1. Wake early, bathe and take a sankalp to keep the fast for the well-being of your children.
  2. Draw or place an image of Ahoi Mata with a syahu and cubs on a wall, or use a printed image, and add eight small figures (ashta kosthak) if your tradition does so.
  3. In the evening, set up a kalash of water, with a silver or sterling coin string (syahu mala) if your family uses one.
  4. Offer roli, akshat, flowers, sweets, fruit and traditional foods such as puri, halwa and boiled wheat.
  5. Read or listen to the Ahoi Ashtami katha, and perform the aarti.
  6. Offer arghya to the stars (or moon) using the kalash water, then break the fast, as per family custom.

Radha Kund Snan

At Radha Kund near Mathura, couples who wish to have a child traditionally take a holy dip at midnight on Ahoi Ashtami. It is a deeply held pilgrimage tradition.

Health Note

Many mothers keep a waterless fast until the stars appear. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take medicine, consider a fruit-and-water fast, or follow your doctor's advice. The vrat is meant to be an offering of love and not a hardship.
