People in Mumbai and Thane meet many ideas about space at once. A relative recommends a Feng Shui crystal, a shopkeeper offers a copper pyramid, a website talks of geo energy, and a neighbour says the flat's entrance is wrong. It is hard to know which of these belong to a real tradition, which are modern inventions and which are simply products for sale.

This page lays out the difference between Feng Shui and Vastu, explains pyramid Vastu and earth-energy claims honestly, and describes the gentle, non-structural Vastu remedies that we find sensible. Our own focus is Vastu consultation, held online by phone or video in English, Hindi or Marathi. We present all of this as traditional, belief-based guidance for reflection, not as proven science and not as a guarantee.

Vastu and Feng Shui: Two Traditions, Two Origins

Vastu Shastra is an Indian tradition of architecture and orientation, drawn from Sanskrit texts such as the Vastu and Shilpa shastras. Feng Shui is a Chinese tradition, whose name means wind and water, developed to choose sites for dwellings and burials in harmony with landscape. They share an interest in direction, light and the balance of natural forces, but they grew in different cultures with different ideas.

Their vocabulary differs. Vastu speaks of the five elements, the pancha mahabhuta: earth, water, fire, air and space. Classical Feng Shui speaks of five phases, wood, fire, earth, metal and water, which are related in cycles of creation and control. The lists look similar at first glance, but the elements are not equivalent, and the two schools should not be translated into each other word for word.

Feng Shui Basics: Chi, the Bagua and the Compass

In Feng Shui, chi is described as a vital energy that flows through spaces and is said to be helped or hindered by layout. The bagua is an eight-sided map used to link areas of a room or home with themes of life such as wealth, career or relationships. Some schools lay it over the floor plan from the entrance, while others use a compass and the occupant's birth details.

We want to be honest here. These are traditional and cultural frameworks, and there is no scientific evidence that chi can be measured or that a bagua area changes outcomes. Many people still enjoy the practical side of Feng Shui, such as open entrances, good light, clear pathways and uncluttered rooms, because these make a home pleasanter to live in. That is a fair reason to value it, and it needs no promise of results.

Should You Mix Feng Shui and Vastu?

Our advice is not to mix the two without a clear reason. The systems use different directions, different meanings for the same corner and different remedies, so combining them can produce contradictory advice. A north-east corner that Vastu treats as the place for worship and water might be assigned a different role in a Feng Shui map, and following both can leave a family confused.

It is usually calmer to choose one framework that suits your background and stay with it. A Hindu family in Mumbai may find Vastu natural because it fits their festivals, prayer space and everyday customs. Someone who has grown up with Feng Shui may prefer it. If you do wish to draw on both, we suggest picking one as the main guide and using the other only for ideas you find simple and harmless, such as better light.

Pyramid Vastu: What Is Claimed and What Is Known

Pyramid Vastu is a modern practice in which pyramids of copper, metal or other materials are placed in rooms or buildings in the belief that they correct directional faults. It is not described in the classical Vastu texts, and it borrows from twentieth-century ideas about pyramid shapes and energy. A pyramid expert may sell kits that are said to balance an entire flat.

There is no scientific evidence that these objects affect a building's energy or its occupants' fortunes. Some people find a small object a comforting symbol, and that is a personal choice. Our caution is about cost: please do not spend a large amount on pyramids, strips or plates on the strength of a claim, and be wary of anyone who says a purchase is essential. We do not sell any such product.

Geo Energy, Earth Energy and Geopathic Claims

A geo energy consultant may speak of earth energy lines, underground water veins or geopathic stress said to affect sleep and health in certain spots. Dowsing rods or pendulums are often used to locate these. Ideas of this kind exist in several cultures, and in Indian tradition the land itself is respected, with soil and water read before building.

However, geopathic claims have no accepted scientific basis, and we present them only as belief. They should never be used to explain illness or to frighten a family. If someone sleeps badly or feels unwell, a doctor should be consulted first. Practical causes such as noise, light, a poor mattress, damp or stress deserve attention before any energy explanation, and no expensive device is needed to take them seriously. If a reading by dowsing is offered, treat it as a personal belief and not as a measurement, and ask what it is based on before agreeing to any paid correction.

Vastu Remedies That Stay Simple and Non-Structural

When people ask for Vastu remedies, they often fear walls will have to be broken. In most cases the suggestions are modest. These include rearranging furniture, changing which room is used for which purpose, using suitable colours and light, clearing clutter from entrances and corners, keeping the north-east tidy and light, and choosing a better position for the prayer space or study desk.

We say clearly that remedies are optional and that their effect is a matter of belief. A tidy, bright and well-ventilated home tends to feel calmer in any tradition, and that is a sound reason to follow many of them. We avoid costly items, special stones or long lists of things to buy. If an adjustment is awkward or expensive, we simply say so, and suggest that it can be skipped.

Vedic Architecture, Vastu Purusha Mandala and Sthapatya Veda

The classical root of Vastu is wider than room directions. Sthapatya Veda is the body of knowledge on building and architecture associated with the Atharva Veda tradition, while the Shilpa Shastras describe the craft of temples, houses and towns. A central idea is the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a grid, often of sixty-four or eighty-one squares, which maps a site to the deities and directions that preside over its parts.

A Vedic architecture consultant draws on these sources, and some practitioners use the term for fully designed buildings. Texts differ on proportions and details, and a few rules were written for temples and villages rather than for an apartment tower. This is why we apply the tradition with judgement. It is a rich heritage worth knowing, and it can guide a thoughtful arrangement without being treated as fixed law. In a modern Mumbai building the most useful parts are usually the broad ideas of light, air, openness and orderly use of each room, which any family can apply without special objects or construction.

Choosing a Consultant and What Sansthaan Offers

Whether you approach a Feng Shui consultant, a Vastu remedial consultant or a Vedic architecture adviser, look for someone who asks for your plan, explains the reason for each point, separates classical sources from modern additions, and states clearly that results are not guaranteed. Be cautious of fear-based claims, urgent demands for payment, or a list of products that must be bought.

At Sansthaan, our focus is Vastu consultation, covering flats, homes, shops and offices across Mumbai, Thane and the suburbs, held online by phone or video. We do not sell objects or products, and this page explains Feng Shui only so that you can compare it and decide calmly. Our consultations are practical and low in cost, and we explain each point so that you understand it before acting. For specific spaces, please see Home Vastu and Commercial Vastu.

Frequently Asked Questions: Feng Shui and Vastu Remedies in Mumbai and Thane

Vastu is an Indian system built on Sanskrit texts and the five elements, while Feng Shui is a Chinese system built on chi, the bagua and five phases. Their directions and remedies differ, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Our focus is Vastu consultation. We explain Feng Shui here so you can compare the two traditions, but we do not offer it as a service. If you prefer Feng Shui, we suggest choosing a practitioner trained in that system.

We advise against mixing them without a clear reason, because the same corner can carry different meanings and lead to contradictory advice. It is usually calmer to follow one tradition consistently and borrow only simple, harmless ideas such as better lighting.

Pyramid Vastu is a modern practice not found in the classical texts, and there is no scientific evidence that it works. Some people keep a small object as a symbol. We advise against spending significant money on it and do not sell pyramids.

They are terms for supposed harmful earth energies from underground water or mineral lines. They have no accepted scientific basis, and we present them as belief only. If you have symptoms such as poor sleep or health concerns, please see a doctor.

Common ones include rearranging furniture, changing a room's use, clearing clutter, improving light, choosing colours carefully and tidying the north-east. They suit rented flats and cost little. They are optional and belief-based, not guaranteed.

No. Classical Vastu does not depend on costly items, and we do not sell any. If someone insists a purchase is essential or uses fear to sell it, we suggest pausing and seeking a second opinion before spending.

It is a classical grid, often of 64 or 81 squares, representing the site as a cosmic being with deities presiding over its parts. It guides the placement of rooms and activities in traditional architecture, and texts and schools vary in their details.

Sthapatya Veda is the traditional body of knowledge on architecture and building, linked with the Atharva Veda tradition and the Shilpa Shastras. It is the classical source behind much of Vastu, including temple and house design.

Look for someone who asks for your plan, explains each suggestion, prefers non-structural changes, admits limits, and avoids fear or pressure. Be cautious about large payments, guaranteed outcomes or compulsory products. Remedies should always remain your choice.
