What Are the Reasons to Celebrate Diwali?

What Are the Reasons to Celebrate Diwali?

Ask ten people why they celebrate Diwali and you may get ten different answers. That is the beauty of the festival: it holds many stories, from many regions and faiths, all united by light. Here are the main reasons Diwali is celebrated.

1. Lord Rama's Return to Ayodhya

In North India, Diwali is famously linked to the return of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and the defeat of Ravana. The people of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting rows of lamps on the new-moon night, the origin of the word Deepavali, "a row of lamps".

2. The Emergence of Goddess Lakshmi

According to tradition, Lakshmi emerged from the churning of the ocean and is worshipped as the goddess of prosperity on Diwali night. Read more in why Lakshmi Puja is celebrated.

3. Krishna's Victory over Narakasura

In South India, Maharashtra and elsewhere, the day before Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi) marks Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura, who had imprisoned thousands of people. The early-morning oil bath and fireworks on that day celebrate the end of oppression.

4. Vamana and King Bali

The Vamana avatar of Vishnu is said to have sent the generous King Bali to the netherworld, granting him the boon to return to earth once a year. Bali Pratipada, on the day after Diwali, remembers this story.

5. Mahavira's Nirvana (Jain Tradition)

For Jains, Diwali marks the nirvana of Lord Mahavira, the twenty-fourth Tirthankara. The lamps symbolise the light of knowledge that remains after his passing.

6. Bandi Chhor Divas (Sikh Tradition)

Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas to remember the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from Gwalior Fort, along with the princes who were imprisoned with him. The Golden Temple in Amritsar is lit with lamps.

7. Kali Puja in Bengal and Eastern India

In Bengal, Odisha and Assam, the new-moon night is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is worshipped at night with lamps and offerings.

8. Harvest, New Year and Business

Diwali also marks the end of the harvest season in many regions and, in Gujarat and parts of western India, the beginning of the new financial and calendar year. Traders open fresh account books and perform Chopda Pujan.

What They Share

Across these stories the common thread is the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. For this reason, Diwali has come to be celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists alike, and by people of many other backgrounds as a festival of community.
